1 hour ago 1

The archetypal reviews of the iPhone Duo were published today, providing america with a person look astatine the foldable instrumentality successful enactment up of its motorboat connected Friday.

The Verge's Nilay Patel and Allison Johnson said the iPhone Duo is an expensive, compromised, and yet amusive first-generation product:It is expensive, it's afloat of compromises, and it tin beryllium incredibly frustrating to use. Switching from the Duo backmost to 1 of our modular slab phones to get thing done often felt similar a relief. Sometimes you conscionable request your iPhone to bash what you request it to bash — that's wherefore Apple has been truthful risk-averse successful changing it.

But each of the hazard and weirdness of the Duo is besides fun, successful the mode the champion aboriginal adopter devices are fun. It's incomplete arsenic a product, but implicit capable arsenic an thought that you tin spot wherever things are going. It's reminiscent of the precise archetypal MacBook Air, which took precisely nary 1 by tempest — it took a afloat redesign for Apple to get it right, and past it took implicit the full industry.

Gizmodo's Raymond Wong on the awesome show of the iPhone Duo's A20 Pro chip:Coming from the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max that I reviewed past month, I experienced nary worldly slowdown successful wide show connected the iPhone Duo. The foldable shares the aforesaid A20 Pro spot with the aforesaid 6-core CPU, 7-core GPU, and dual 16-core Neural Engine. This is not an iPhone Air vs. iPhone 17 Pros concern wherever the Air has 1 little GPU halfway and throttles nether sustained show due to the fact that it's excessively thin, overheats, and doesn't person a vapor enclosure to chill it. While not arsenic ample arsenic the 1 successful the iPhone 18 Pros, the iPhone Duo's vapor chamber, which Apple says helps supply up to 35% higher sustained show than the iPhone 17 Pro, does a coagulated occupation cooling it down to forestall lag oregon slowdown erstwhile apps truly activate each the CPU and GPU cores.

This responsiveness is backed by the single-core and multi-core scores connected Geekbench 7, the modular benchmarking app for measuring a device's CPU and GPU's power. The iPhone Duo and iPhone 18 Pro scored astir identical scores (averaged retired implicit 3 tests): 4,002 connected single-core and 10,728 connected multi-core. Similarly, the GPU trial besides returned astir the aforesaid score: 60,608. I ran the aforesaid CPU and GPU tests connected the iPhone Duo's closest Android competitor, the Galaxy Z Fold 8. The CPU successful its Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy spot lone mustered 3,112 connected single-core. It fared astir adjacent connected multi-core with a 10,438 score. For the GPU, the Z Fold 8 scored a measly 17,331 connected the GPU test. That puts the Z Fold 8 astatine 22% little almighty connected single-core and a whopping 71% little performant for the GPU.WIRED's Julian Chokkattu said galore third-party apps successful the App Store inactive request to beryllium updated to enactment the afloat width of the iPhone Duo's interior display:Much of my clip this past week has been reasoning astir wasted space. Sometimes I questioned Apple's determination to determination each the navigation elements of iOS to the close rail—there's truthful overmuch wasted abstraction successful immoderate apps! Then I usage an app that uses each that space, and I'm content. That's astir apt my takeaway. If you privation to effort Apple's archetypal folding phone, hold a fewer months for developers to optimize their apps. In the meantime, apps that are not optimized for the instrumentality are letterboxed, meaning they person ample achromatic bars connected the near and close sides of the app.

Of course, immoderate customers mightiness person to hold a fewer months for the iPhone Duo regardless, with pre-order transportation dates into November to January but getting bumped up for some. By then, much apps volition person been recompiled with the iOS 27.1 SDK.

CNET's Abrar Al-Heeti connected utilizing the iPhone Duo's outer and interior displays:

Despite the Duo's compact 5.4-inch screen screen, it doesn't consciousness cramped. I tin comfortably bash conscionable astir thing I would connected a bar-style phone, conscionable connected a smaller scale. The keyboard is roomy, taking up astir fractional the screen screen, truthful typing feels seamless and easy. I haven't grappled with immoderate much typos than usual. I thin to instrumentality to the screen show for less-involved tasks specified arsenic checking an email, texting, ordering an Uber oregon snapping a photo.

When I'm doing thing that requires much clip oregon effort, I unfastened the Duo to usage its 7.6-inch interior display. That includes moving successful Google Docs, watching a YouTube video, streaming, scrolling done the Photos app oregon multitasking. Reading is simply a delight with the Duo's matte display, which feels easier connected the eyes, including portion outdoors. The under-display FaceTime camera, which virtually disappears erstwhile not successful usage for a telephone oregon photo, besides makes contented look much immersive without a gaping achromatic hole.

9to5Mac's Chance Miller said it takes clip to get utilized to Touch ID alternatively of Face ID:I deliberation switching from Face ID to Touch ID has been the hardest happening to get utilized to connected iPhone Duo. I've go truthful accustomed to conscionable looking astatine my iPhone to unlock it. Having to deliberately scope for the broadside fastener feels similar a measurement backward, adjacent though Touch ID works rapidly and reliably.

One payment I person enjoyed: Touch ID is simply a batch easier to usage erstwhile your iPhone is lying level connected a table. Instead of picking up your iPhone to unlock it with Face ID, you tin remainder your digit connected the Touch ID sensor and to glimpse astatine your locked notifications.

iPhone Duo besides supports Apple Watch unlock. If you alteration this feature, you tin swipe up connected your iPhone Duo's fastener screen, and it volition automatically unlock if you're wearing your Apple Watch (so agelong arsenic your Apple Watch has a passcode connected it and is unlocked).

I utilized my iPhone Duo without Apple Watch unlock enabled for the archetypal fewer days to get a consciousness for what it's similar to usage an iPhone with Touch ID for the archetypal clip successful astir a decade. Ultimately, I turned connected Apple Watch unlock, and it does marque the acquisition importantly better.

Tom's Guide's Mark Spoonauer conducted a artillery beingness trial that involves browsing the web astatine 150 nits of show brightness implicit 5G until the artillery dies, and helium said the iPhone Duo lasted for 13 hours and 20 minutes.

Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold8 lasted 10 hours and 6 minutes, and the iPhone 18 Pro Max clocked successful astatine 17 hours and 31 minutes:

iPhone 18 Pro Max: 17 hours and 31 minutes

iPhone Duo: 13 hours and 20 minutes

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8: 10 hours and 6 minutes

iPhone Duo has 2 rear 48-megapixel Fusion Main and Fusion Ultra Wide cameras, but nary Telephoto camera. PetaPixel's Jaron Schneider has published much of a photography-focused review, and lensman Tyler Stalman has a video review.
